Heat Bloc Ultra Radiant Barrier: an Instant Shade Tree Over Your Home!
For many Atlanta homeowners, our Heat Bloc Ultra radiant barrier is an instant shade tree over their home! We all know that it’s easier to cool a home beneath shade trees than it is to cool a home in the open sunshine. In the summer, a home under the protection of shade trees just feels cooler!
NASA found a way to protect their assets from extreme Radiant energy. And the military began using this technology. Now, we consumers have access to spray applied Radiant Heat Barriers. Radiant Barriers differ from traditional attic insulation.
QUICK SCIENCE LESSON:
Heat travels through your home in 3 forms:
- Conductive. This is by touch, one surface in contact with another surface and the heat energy transfers from hot to cold. (Remember the law of thermodynamics?) That means in the summer, the outdoor heat is replacing your interior cool air. And in the winter, the indoor heat is being replaced with the outdoor cold temperatures. It’s always the opposite of what you wish it was!
- Convective. This is by air. Temperature (heat) energy being conveyed or transfered by air currents. This is why you enjoy a ceiling fan breeze on your face, even though the temperature in the room never changed. Convective heat gain/loss is slowed by sealing the myriad of air leaks in your exterior walls, floors, and ceilings. Cellulose insulation, because of it’s high density – works very well at dramatically reducing both conductive and convective energy loss/gain in your home. (Think about how heavy that Sunday newspaper is! Cellulose insulation insulates by blocking airflow.)
- Radiant. This is by electromagnetic wavelength. As the sun’s electromagnetic waves encounter mass (your roof), they create heat… radiant heat. That energy is what heats your Atlanta attic to 140+ degrees every summer day! No one much cares how hot your attic gets, because we just blow R-60 cellulose up there and your ceilings will never know it’s an inferno up there. BUT, IF you have your precious, fragile AC system up there trying it’s darnest to cool your home, you are wasting lots of money. Not only wasted money, but you could have a super-efficient, 19 SEER “hotdog” AC unit in that attic, and it’s performing at lousy 13 SEER levels due to the extreme heat. So, for those attics we highly recommend our Heat Bloc Ultra radiant barrier plus our cellulose insulation upgrade.
Cellulose insulation protects your home from convective and conductive heat transfer. And the Radiant Barrier handles the 3rd attack wave of heat gain/loss. So, we dramatically SLOW all 3 forms of heat gain and heat loss in your attic.
How Bird Family Insulation chooses the house that qualifies for Heat Bloc Ultra Radiant Heat Barrier to benefit our clients:
- The house must have AC ducts and system(s) in the attic.
- The house roofline must have exposure to direct mid-day through evening sunshine.
- Even greater benefits occur if the house has a dark colored roof; and / or a low pitch roof with little attic ventilation.
We spray the reflective Radiant Barrier coating to the underside of the roof deck. It reflects 81% of the radiant heat caused by the sun. This technique is superior to hand-stapling sheets of foil under your rafters. Here are your benefits of Heat Bloc Ultra Radiant Barrier:
-
Less heat in your attic means cooler ducts for your AC to travel through.
-
Cooler ducts = cooler air at your vents! Imagine cooler air blowing in your face!
-
Cooler ducts and cooler air means your AC equipment doesn’t run as often, rewarding you with lower power bills and longer equipment life.
-
It’s non-conductive. It won’t interfere with your atttic mounted antenna or with cell phone coverage, (about 35% of foil applications experience signal interference).
-
Very low VOC’s (because it is water based) mean it is practically odorless, so you can stay home while we install your radiant barrier.
-
It breathes. Meaning it will not contribute to moisture building up on your roof surfaces.
Your investment for Heat Bloc Ultra Radiant Barrier usually is less than $0.95 per square foot. When bundled with our additional Home Energy Makeover services, Heat Bloc Ultra Radiant Barrier is as low as $0.70 per square foot, installed!
Some Homeowners Request Foil Radiant Barriers. Where possible, we have installed foil. However, foil radiant barrier systems are labor intensive to install, and therefore have a higher initial investment to cover the extra time and labor. Also, the Foil System must have gaps left for ventilation, so the coverage is not as comprehensive as the Spray-Applied Radiant Barrier.
