Bird Knows Best—Solving Insulation Problems in Georgia This Second Week of June

Guess what? The Atlanta Comic Con is happening this weekend! It’s the perfect event for kids and the young at heart to embrace their nerdiness. Check out all the exhibitors that have toys, games, comic books, and more on display. Plus, there are awesome cosplayers you can take pictures with at the event. You can even dress up as your favorite superhero (or villain)! Learn more about the event here.

Our team at Bird Family Insulation might not have capes on, but we’ve got our own superpowers as we battle our archnemeses—high energy bills, inefficient insulation, and discomfort! We defeated those evil fiends for our clients in Atlanta this week. Read on to get all the details!

Replacing Old R-19 Batting with Better Open-Cell Insulation in Georgia

The first project we feature in this blog post is in a residential home. Other homeowners think that getting insulation done is a one-time affair. If conditions ARE ideal, insulation should last for a long time. But there are situations we cannot avoid as our insulation ages and changes.

This client’s old fiberglass R-19 batting was in really rough shape. They contacted our professionals to take care of the issue. We started by removing the old insulation.

Our team then installed a plastic draping in the garage/basement to protect the area from any overspray. You wouldn’t want the entire area covered in foam insulation, right? We do this because client satisfaction is our top priority, and no client would be satisfied with a huge mess!

undefined

The crew then sprayed 2 inches of foam insulation into the subfloor. Spray foam insulation is a great alternative to the more traditional fiberglass type. Now, their floors won’t have to get cold in the winter. Plus, the air quality in their home will improve.

undefined

We also sprayed 5.5 inches of open-cell foam insulation into our client’s attic. An attic that is inefficiently insulated gets exposed to high and low temperatures, which eventually seep into our living spaces. With the attic encapsulated in spray foam, it will no longer get too cold or too hot, and neither will our client’s home.

And look at this quality work in the basement! Now, the temperature in their home will be much more consistent. They won’t need to spend too much on cooling and heating bills from now on.

Better Insulation to Help Families in Atlanta

For our next project, we worked on Joel’s home in Atlanta. Our client had sold their old house without having located one to buy! The client’s brother was kind enough to share the comforts of his home with our client while they are still looking for a home to purchase.

The home was very hard to cool. Thus, their AC ran non-stop all the time. They even purchased a window unit to help cool the home. Just imagine the energy bills!

Our client wanted to show gratitude to his brother for giving them the house to live in for the meanwhile. As a surprise, they employed us to upgrade the attic insulation with our standard service.

Take a look at all this trash and debris! Chris, our crew member, removed all of this. He then leveled out the old fiberglass blankets and install rulers. Our team is about to start installing the cellulose insulation for this home.

undefined

We also properly ducted the range hood so it exhausts out the roof. Take a look at the pic below! It’s a new duct that Chris installed to properly vent the kitchen exhaust fan. It’s attached to a “roof cap” in the roof deck and sealed.

Once this project is completed, Joel and his family can have dramatically improved comfort in their living areas, as well as amazing energy savings!

From Inferno-Like Air to Comfortable Living Spaces in Decatur

For our last project, we helped out Ashton in Decatur, Georgia.

See the picture below? It was taken in an area behind a knee wall above the garage ceiling. Hot, humid inferno-like air often gathers behind areas like this, which then languishes in the floor system below. This creates constant warmth in the floor, which then sabotages any attempts to keep the rooms below cool with the AC. It’s the opposite dynamics as well in the winter season when you try to get your living areas warm!

undefined

To solve this, we do what we call “joist-blocking”. Blocking joints is fundamental to getting a bonus room comfortable. With it, you can say goodbye to that hellish air we talked about earlier.

undefined

We love blocking these joist bays while spraying the knee wall with spray foam insulation. Blocking joist bays is part of the comprehensive plan we practice when a client employs us to "fix the bonus room".

undefined

Ashton’s house had three other areas that trapped heat and made their home uncomfortable. We removed the old fiberglass insulation and installed high-performance spray foam insulation. This will save them major money on cooling and heating costs over time, a great investment for any home.
